Moscato Wine

IN THE BOTTLE

Aromas of ripe peaches and melon (verging on canned fruit cup), with white flowers like honeysuckle jumping out of the glass. On the palate, fruits like nectarine and guava emerge along with a touch of honey on the finish.

CLASSIC FLAVOR PROFILES OF VARIETAL

Muscat is made in a range of styles, dry to sweet, still to sparkling, but the essence of the grape remains in every expression. Muscat is aromatic, with heady notes of white flowers like honeysuckle, along with ripe stone fruits like peach, accompanied by citrus and melon with a slightly green herbal note on the finish.

VARIETAL FACTS

The reason that Muscat smells so much like flowers is because the same chemical aromas found in flowers is also in Muscat. Muscat is high in linalool (lavender and hops), nerol (roses), and geraniol (you guessed it, geraniums). These compounds are all highly aromatic, which contribute to the Moscato’s intensity on the nose.

HISTORY

Because Muscat is one of the oldest grapes in the world, there are many different varieties of Muscat. The three major varieties are Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains, Muscat Ottonel, and Muscat of Alexandria. Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains is the grape in Moscato d'Asti and has a more delicate aromatic character. Muscat Ottonel is used to make in dessert wines in Eastern Europe. Muscat of Alexandria is the hardiest of the three and is widely planted in California, which is where we source our Muscat.

DID YOU KNOW?

Muscat of Alexandria is one of the few wine grapes that is also eaten as a table grape. It is also dried into raisins and the name for Muscat in Sicily is Zibibbo, derived from Muscat's Arabic name, "zbib," which literally means raisin.
