The Winter Red begins with a base of red wine and mulling it with warm baking spices and citrus. It has notes of red apple, plum, clove, cinnamon, and orange peel. Think of a warm cherry pie. 

CLASSIC FLAVOR PROFILES OF VARIETAL

To make Winter Red, we take a blend of red wine and infuse it with mulling spices for a few days. We use warming spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove, while also adding orange peel for an aromatic citrus note. 

VARIETAL FACTS

Heating a beverage can drastically change how you perceive its aromas. As wine gets warmer, volatile aromas easily escape into the air. For mulled wines, this means that the essential oils from orange peel along with spice aromas, like cinnamon and nutmeg, tend to jump out of the glass. 

HISTORY

The term mulled wine comes from the Old English word “myl” which means “to sweeten.” The spices, exotic and expensive at the time, were also believed to be medicinal. In the Middle Ages, mulled wine was known by the name of Hippocras. If that name sounds familiar, it is because he was an ancient Greek physician, for whom the Hippocratic Oath (“do no harm”) comes from. 

DID YOU KNOW?

Like the Winter White, this wine can be served cool or warm garnished with an orange slice. For a festive serving option, put a few sliced oranges, cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, and star anise into a crock pot set to low with a few bottles of Winter Red.
