Rosé Wine

IN THE BOTTLE

A blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre from Washington state. Although these grapes are found together in southeastern France's Rhône Valley, they also thrive in the warm, dry conditions of Washington. Fresh and juicy, with notes of strawberry, raspberry, and rhubarb along with a touch of lemon and green apple on the finish.

CLASSIC FLAVOR PROFILES OF VARIETAL

In Rhône blends, Grenache gives ripe fruit flavors like strawberries and cherries while also providing some alcoholic kick. Mourvèdre adds darker fruit notes, like red and black plum, while Syrah brings flavors of pepper and green herbs. Think of the blend like a musical cord, where the three together are greater than the sum of their parts.

VARIETAL FACTS

Although Grenache/Syrah/Mourvèdre (GSM) blends are commonly associated with France's Rhône Valley, the grapes are widely planted in Provence, an area to the southeast of the Rhône. In Provence, rosé is king, with 90% of the region's production devoted to rosé. GSM blends form the backbone of Provencal rosé and we have modeled our rosé on this iconic style.

HISTORY

Quality, dry rosé is a recent phenomenon. Even in the 1990s, off dry rosés like White Zinfandel, were the norm. However, as Americans became fascinated with French wine and celebrities like Drew Barrymore, Angelina Jolie, and Brad Pitt started making rosé, it skyrocketed in popularity. Rosé had clearly arrived by 2014 when, at the high point of the summer, the Hamptons began running dangerously low on rosé. The gossip page of the New York Post wryly commented, "We hear rumblings that restaurants and wine shops are low … because the summering hordes have been tirelessly swilling all season long."

DID YOU KNOW?

The first screwcap for wine was developed in the late 1960s, but it did not become widespread until the early 2000s when wineries in Australia and New Zealand started bottling their wines under screw cap.
