Old Vine Zin Wine

IN THE BOTTLE

Our Old Vine Zin is from Lodi, an area south of Sacramento in California’s Central Valley. Layers of fruit with ripe raspberries, cranberries, and jammy blackberries, along with a hint of baking spices and black pepper. Lush and dense in texture, our Old Vine Zin is an opulent expression of one of California's signature grapes.

CLASSIC FLAVOR PROFILES OF VARIETAL

Zinfandel grapes tend ripen unevenly, which means you can have a wide variety of fruit flavors in your glass. Tart red fruit like cherries can be found with ripe black fruit like black plums and even overripe blue fruit like boysenberry or blueberry

VARIETAL FACTS

White Zinfandel is just an off-dry Zinfandel rosé. It was created by accident in 1972 at Sutter Home winery. The winemaker was trying to create a dry Zinfandel rosé, but the fermentation got "stuck," a winemaking term for when the yeast stops fermenting the sugar into alcohol. This left the wine a little sweet, but they liked the results and bottled it. Soon it was one of the top selling wines in the United States

HISTORY

The term "old vines" applies to vines over thirty-five years old. As vines age, they yield less fruit, but the quality of the fruit increases. Because these vines are not very productive, they are expensive for farmers because they could always replant to a higher yielding and more profitable grape like Cabernet Sauvignon. Additionally, you can easily find old vine Zinfandel in California planted back before Prohibition in the 1920s, making it a real treat to have such high-quality grapes for our Old Vine Zin.

DID YOU KNOW?

Zinfandel is the same grape as Primitivo, a variety from a region in southern Italy called Puglia (imagine the heel part of the Italian boot). However, Zinfandel did not originate there! It is from Croatia where it is called Crljenak Kaštelanski.
