Malbec Wine

IN THE BOTTLE

We source our Malbec from high quality vineyards in California. Black and blue fruits dominate, with notes of blackberry, blueberry, and black cherries. On the palate, the wine has firm tannins with lush body, with flavors of baking spices and a touch of black pepper.

CLASSIC FLAVOR PROFILES OF VARIETAL

Malbec from cooler climates will have both red and black fruit flavors. However, if it does not ripen enough, the tannins will be harsh, and it will also show very green, herbaceous notes. From warmer climates like Argentina or California, Malbec has generous black and blue fruits, with the ripest examples having a boysenberry syrup aroma.

VARIETAL FACTS

Malbec is the number one grape of Argentina and grows primarily in the foothills of the Andes Mountains, with vineyards averaging over half a mile in elevation. This ensures the grapes are cooled by driving winds from the Andes in the evenings, creating deeply colored and intensely flavored wines. These are ideal conditions to ripen Malbec and when combined with the low cost of making wine in Argentina, it is easy to see why Argentinian Malbec became popular in the late 90s/early 00s.

HISTORY

Malbec originated in France, where it was used as a blending grape in Bordeaux. Although it is one of the 6 "noble" grapes of Bordeaux, it is seldom found there now because a frost in the 1950s destroyed most Malbec vines. Many growers decided to replant with the more productive Merlot instead. Malbec can still be found in France in the Cahors region, located just a few hours to the east of Bordeaux. In medieval times, Malbec was known as "the black wine of Cahors" due to its intense, inky color.

Argentinian Malbec grows in some of the highest commercial vineyards in the world. One vineyard in the region of Jujuy is located over two miles above sea level!
