Chardonnay Wine

IN THE BOTTLE

Our Chardonnay comes from Lodi, an area to the south of Sacramento in California’s Central Valley. Aromas of yellow apple, toast, grilled pineapple, butter, and banana compliment notes of vanilla and baking spices. Rich and creamy with balanced acidity and medium body.

CLASSIC FLAVOR PROFILES OF VARIETAL

Because Chardonnay works well with many different winemaking techniques, examples can range from tart and crisp with restrained fruit flavor to rich and complex, with notes of vanilla and butterscotch. Here we use oak to add notes of toast along with a hint of vanilla on the finish, giving complexity to the wine

VARIETAL FACTS

This Chardonnay undergoes a process called malolactic fermentation. Special bacteria ferment malic acid, the acid in tart green apples, into lactic acid, which is found in dairy products like yogurt and sour cream. Because lactic acid is less harsh than malic acid, it makes the wine softer and creamier. During this process, one of the byproducts is a buttery flavor which is why you often see descriptors like "butterscotch" or "butter" associated with a wine that has been through malolactic fermentation.

HISTORY

Chardonnay is one of the most highly regarded grapes in the world for multiple reasons. First, it adapts well to many climates, ripening early and having generous yields. The second is that it has a long history of making quality wines in France, where monasteries in Burgundy kept careful records of the best vineyards for centuries. And finally, the British loved French wines, and as the Brits created an empire that spanned the globe, they brought their love of wine with them. This spread grapes like Chardonnay across the world and created a thirst for them that exists to this day.

DID YOU KNOW?

Chardonnay is a major component in Champagne and other sparkling wines (often it is the only grape used in making Blanc de Blanc). In the southern Burgundy Chardonnay is grown in an area called the Cote d'Or, literally "the golden slope," named because the hills take on a golden hue in autumn as the leaves on the vines change color.
