Black Muscat Wine
Black Muscat is a fragrant, fruit-forward beauty that’s as fun to drink as it is to describe. Expect juicy flavors of red grapes, strawberry jam, ripe peach, delicate rose petals, and a drizzle of honey. It’s lightly sweet, deeply aromatic, and absolutely sings alongside bold flavors—especially spicy Thai or Chinese dishes with beef or pork. If you’re a fan of wines that smell as good as they taste, this one’s for you.
Black Muscat is one of the more intriguing members of the Muscat family. Also known as Muscat Hamburg, this dark-skinned clone is prized for its vivid perfume and deep color, which is rare for a Muscat variety. While many Muscats are pale and floral, Black Muscat offers a rich, ruby hue and a combination of fresh, grapey sweetness with heady floral aromas. Think of roses and sun-warmed berries. It’s often used in dessert wines or sweet red blends, but when made thoughtfully, like in this seasonal release, it strikes a vibrant balance of fruit, florals, and freshness.
Muscat is among the oldest known grape families, with roots believed to stretch back thousands of years to the Mediterranean and the Middle East. Unlike many grape families, Muscat exists in a wide array of forms, from Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains to Muscat of Alexandria, each adapted to different regions and styles. Black Muscat, thought to be a cross between Schiava Grossa and Muscat of Alexandria, originated in the 19th century and quickly spread across Europe and California. Though often used in table grape production, it has recently gained respect among winemakers for its potential to craft deeply aromatic, expressive wines, especially when made in small batches like this one. Its lineage may be ancient, but its appeal is timeless.
