Shiraz Wine (Barossa Valley, Australia)

IN THE BOTTLE

Ripe blackberries with heady aromas of violets, black licorice, and savory olives along with subtle notes of vanilla from aging in oak. Our Shiraz is from Australia's Barossa Valley, whose warm climate results in higher alcohol, firm yet velvety tannins, and lower acidity, creating a smooth, supple wine.

CLASSIC FLAVOR PROFILES OF VARIETAL

When grown in cooler regions, Syrah will have a mixture of ripe red and black fruit, with savory notes like leather, dried herbs, and black pepper. In warm regions, Syrah can become extremely ripe, almost overripe, with jammy black and blue fruits. The savory notes fall into the background and the tannins become more rounded. In Australia, notes of eucalyptus (think Vick's VapoRub) can appear in the wine. Eucalyptus is native to Australia and the tree's essential oils are extremely powerful. Breezes blowing through the trees transfer these oils to the grape skins, and the alcohol created during fermentation pulls their flavors into the wine.

VARIETAL FACTS

Shiraz is simply the Australian name for Syrah. Syrah is native to the Rhône Valley of France but is grown around the world, with Australia considered to be a classic region for the grape. In fact, one of the most highly regarded Syrahs in the world comes from Australia: Penfolds Grange Shiraz.

HISTORY

The world's oldest Syrah/Shiraz vines are in the Barossa Valley in Australia. Langmeil Winery's "Freedom" vineyard was first planted in 1843 and they are still making wine from these grapes nearly 200 years later!

DID YOU KNOW?

Australia is an exceptionally large continent (about the same size as the United States), but 85% of their vines and 85% of the population can be found in the southeastern corner of the country.
