Pinot Noir Wine

IN THE BOTTLE 

The grapes come from two cool climate regions in California: Monterey, halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, and Clarksburg, just southwest of Sacramento. Both have cool morning breezes which keeps the wine fresh. Medium bodied with notes of red cherry, raspberry, and tea, along with baking spices and smoke from oak barrel aging. 

CLASSIC FLAVOR PROFILES OF VARIETAL 

Pinot Noir is a medium bodied, dry red wine prized for its ability to express terroir. In cooler climate areas like Burgundy, Pinot Noir can lean towards more savory expressions, with notes of forest floor, truffle, and earthiness. In warmer climates like Napa Valley, Pinot Noir can be more fruit forward with flavors of ripe black and red cherry, strawberry, and even cola. In cooler climates, the resulting wines will have more tart fruit flavors, like tart red cherry, cranberry, and pomegranate. 

VARIETAL FACTS 

The most expensive wine in the world is Pinot Noir. In France's Burgundy region, a winery called Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (or DRC for short) farms a small 4.5-acre grand cru vineyard called Romanée-Conti. Around 3,000 bottles of this wine are made each year, and you can find it on the best wine lists in the world starting around $20,000 a bottle! 

HISTORY 

Pinot Noir is famously grown in Burgundy, France. The monasteries of the region lovingly tended the vineyards that were entrusted to them, and over the centuries they took detailed notes of what vineyards produced the best wines. When all you do you is eat, sleep, pray, and drink wine, it is not surprising that these monks wanted to have the best wine! Eventually these rankings were classified into a cru system: village wines could be made from any wines in a village, premier cru wines could be made from good vineyards in the village, and grand cru wines could only come from the best sites. 

DID YOU KNOW? 

Pinot Noir was a late bloomer in California. It is notoriously hard to farm and does not like extremely hot climates, while Cabernet Sauvignon loves them. Only in the past 60 years have winemakers understood where to plant it (cooler areas, typically near the coast) and how to make it in a gentler manner that brings out the best in the grape.
