Super Tuscan Wine

Our Super Tuscan is a blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah. Aromas of black cherry, star anise, blueberry, leather, and herbs, it is a full-bodied wine with medium plus tannins and moderate acidity.
CLASSIC FLAVOR PROFILES OF VARIETAL
Super Tuscans will vary widely in flavor depending on the blend. Sangiovese brings firm tannins and bright cherry flavors, while Cabernet Sauvignon adds body and herbs. Syrah contributes ripe black fruit flavors while Merlot softens the wine, giving it a plush, smooth finish.
VARIETAL FACTS
The name Sangiovese comes from the Latin "sanguis Jovis," which means the blood of Jupiter. "Blood" alludes to the deep red color of Sangiovese-based wines, while the name "Jupiter" is for the Roman god of sky and thunder and refers to the high respect that many have for Sangiovese wines.
HISTORY
The term Super Tuscan was coined in the 1970s when some Tuscan producers came to believe that the winemaking rules in regions like Chianti created lower quality wines. For example, back then Chianti required blending white grapes with Sangiovese to produce Chianti. Similarly, winemakers were forbidden to make a Chianti from 100% Sangiovese. Rebel winemakers would not compromise their quality standards, but because they were breaking the rules, they could only label their wines as Italian table wine. Ironically, these wines were the highest scoring (and highest priced) wines from Italy at the time. Eventually, regional designations became allowed and these rule-breaking Tuscan wines became nicknamed "Super Tuscan."
DID YOU KNOW?
Sangiovese is native to Tuscany and is the base of wines like Chianti and Brunello di Montalcino. But wherever Sangiovese is grown, it usually has a different name (hyper regionalism is common in Italy). In Tuscany alone, Sangiovese is referred to as Brunello, Morellino, or even Prugnolo Gentile, just to name a few synonyms.
