Barbera Wine
IN THE BOTTLE
Roasted and juicy, with aromas of red plum, blueberry, and red cherry finishing with a touch of leather, baking spices, and plush, velvety tannins.
CLASSIC FLAVOR PROFILES OF VARIETAL
Barbera is prized for keeping its acidity even as it gets extremely ripe. The grape originated in the Piedmont region of northwestern Italy and tends to show bright cherry flavors with purple flowers and a touch of earthiness.
VARIETAL FACTS
Barbera can grow at high yields while still producing quality wines, making it an ideal grape for everyday table wines in Italy. Although Italy's acreage of Barbera has declined in the past twenty years, there has been a recent focus on quality production in the Piedmont.
HISTORY
When Italians immigrated to California in large numbers during the gold rush, not only did they bring their food culture with them, but they also brought cuttings of their favorite vines. Historically, wine was not just a beverage: adding wine to water could sterilize the water, making it safe to drink. It was also an extra source of calories and considering the small effort it took to cultivate grapevines, it was a worthy investment for many farmers. Barbera took well to California and there are currently over 4,600 acres planted across the state.
DID YOU KNOW?
Cooper's Hawk Barbera comes from a single vineyard, the Paddy Creek vineyard in Lodi, California, which has over forty acres of Barbera planted. Lodi is in the central valley of California, just to the south of the state capitol Sacramento, and the warm climate allows our Barbara to express a ripe and rich style.
