Cooper's Hawk Lux Chardonnay Wine

IN THE BOTTLE

The grapes come from Arroyo Grande and Edna Valley, two regions in California’s Central Coast, located between San Francisco and Los Angeles. Warm California sun fully ripens the grapes, but ocean breezes preserve acidity. Rich, with notes of yellow apple, nuts, toast, and butter. Aging in French oak barrels adds aromas of vanilla and baking spices.

CLASSIC FLAVOR PROFILES OF VARIETAL

Chardonnay's flavor profile can vary widely depending on the climate and how it is made. We make Lux Chardonnay in a classic California style, lush with aromas of peach and nectarine, along with tropical fruits like grilled pineapple. Aging in French oak barrels adds notes of baking spices like cinnamon, clove, and allspice along with vanilla.

VARIETAL FACTS

The soft-shouldered shape of the bottle is classically associated with the French region of Burgundy, which is why the grapes from Burgundy (Pinot Noir and Chardonnay) can be found in these types of bottles. Bottles with hard-angled shoulders are more classically associated with Bordeaux, which is why we bottle grapes traditionally associated with Bordeaux (like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot) in that style of bottle.

HISTORY

In 1976 a British wine merchant based in Paris created a blind tasting competition between top quality wines from France and California. The whites were California Chardonnays and white Burgundies (also Chardonnay!) and the reds were California Cabernet Sauvignons and French Bordeaux blends. No one expected the American wines to do well, but to the collective surprise of the group, California won both categories. This event eventually became known as The Judgement of Paris and put the world on notice that California was a world-class wine growing region. If you want to watch a fun (and loosely accurate) version of this story, watch the movie Bottle Shock.

DID YOU KNOW?

The most prized Chardonnay in the world is from a hill called Corton-Charlemagne in Burgundy, France, named after eighth century French king and legendary wine lover Charlemagne. His wife did not like his white beard becoming stained with red wine, so what did he do? Rip out the red grapes from the hill and replant it with white grapes!
