Blueberry Acai Bubbly Sangria Wine

Juicy and tempting, this sangria is made by blending red wine with fruit concentrates and carbonated water. It is a fun twist on a light bodied red wine, with aromas of blueberry, tangerine, apple, and passion fruit along with, of course, açaí.

Açaí berries have an exotic flavor, which can be described as a mix between blackberries, raspberries, and dark chocolate. 

VARIETAL FACTS 

Blueberries and açaí are both known to have elevated levels of antioxidants. Açaí berries are more closely related to dates or coconuts than berries because they come from the açaí palm, a tree native to Brazil. To create a balanced sangria, we start with blueberry and açaí juices in a red wine base, but also add apple, lemon, and passion fruit concentrates. The wine is then sweetened and carbonated before bottling. 

HISTORY

Açaí is such a staple of the ribeirinhos (river people) in the Amazon River delta that they have a saying, "without açaí, I'm still hungry." As Brazil began to urbanize in the 1970s and 80s, ribeirinhos brought their food culture to the cities where athletes, including jujitsu fighters, surfers, and volleyball players, came to love the fruit. Served as a frozen sweetened puree, topped with granola and bananas, the açaí bowl eventually became a staple on Brazilian beaches.

The açaí berry is only about an inch around and the seed is up to 80% of the fruit, which means five pounds of açaí berries can yield just one pound of fruit.
